A rainbow flowing over the capitol steps, a ticking time bomb, verses of poetry and song are all part of our new exhibition at the Hay Library at Brown University. Our show explores contemporary and historical activism in the areas of feminism, queer rights, and environmentalism, focusing on the methods and persuasive techniques that propelled these movements. The objects in the exhibition are from the Gordon Hall and Grace Hoag Collection of Dissenting and Extremist Printed Propaganda and from activists working in Providence today.

We are all freshmen and sophomores in the seminar, Displaying Activism Then and Now, and we curated this exhibition as an experiment in the explored the intersection of activism and curatorial techniques. Our exhibition asks how museums can be active participants in struggles for social justice, and how we can get visitors to participate. If you’re in Providence, come learn about histories of struggle and transformation in the feminist, environmentalist, and queer rights movements. Examine and share tactics and methods for doing activism. Take action to improve the world we all share!
