In June and July 2007 scanning and cataloging of Russian Prints & Watercolors and United States Revolutionary Military Portraits & Caricatures was completed.
Currently a large section of British Caricatures, featuring many original watercolors by Hogarth and Rowlandson, is being scanned. The materials from the United States that are currently being scanned are from the Civil War.
Newly available materials available on-line include:
Russia Prints, Watercolors, Uniforms
Spain Military Portraits & Uniforms
India Prints and Watercolors
Italy and Italian States Prints and Watercolors
Great Britain Original Watercolors
The United States portion of the collection is significant in size and contains over 1,600 paintings and drawings depicting World War II by artists who served in the United States armed forces. The small folio, medium folio, and folio materials from the United States are expected to be available on the website as soon as Fall 2007, at which time attention will be turned to the over-sized folio prints and posters from many countries. In addition to the thousands of individual prints, drawings and watercolors in the collection, we plan to digitize several complete albums, sketchbooks, scrapbooks, and portfolios.
In 2008, as we work through the large and giant folio prints, a significant number of original photographs dating from 1850-1945 will also be scanned and added to the collection. There are daguerreotypes of American soldiers and sailors from the pre-Civil War period, and a small group of images of the war. Carte-de-visites of officers and men from the Civil War, as well as from European countries, are by far the largest form of original photographs in the collection.
Once the photographs are added to the collection, we will begin digitizing the wide variety of graphic items such as imagerie sheets, cigarette cards, illustrated sheet music, songsheets, broadsides, postcards, and paper soldiers.
The process of digitizing materials from the Anne S. K. Brown Military Collection began in 2004. To date, there have been over 7,700 digital objects created, cataloged, and added to the repository. These items include prints, drawings, and original watercolors from Austria, Bavaria, Belgium, Germany, Hungary, Italy, The Netherlands, Poland, Russia, Scandinavia, Spain, Latin America, China, Japan, Egypt, Persia, India, and vast quantities of materials from The United States, France, and Great Britain. The material in the collection dates from the 16th-20th centuries, with emphasis on military and naval dress, including portraiture, caricatures, and graphics on military and naval history, campaigns and battles, and the arts and tactics of warfare.
