Writing in the New England Journal of Medicine, Dr. Kenneth Mayer of The Fenway Institute and Brown University and his co-authors report results of the first study to test the effectiveness of using two oral antiretroviral drugs to prevent HIV infection before exposure. The idea of giving people drugs before they encounter a disease is not new. Malaria is an example in which taking a drug first is common practice. And anti-HIV gels have been tested in women.
