Researchers at Brown University led by Dr. Thomas Webster, an Associate Professor of Engineering and Orthopedic Surgery, have discovered a technique that they believe will encourage skin cell growth on parts of the body left exposed by the implantation of prosthetic limbs. The research was geared towards finding a way to reduce the risk of infection that occurs at these vulnerable implantation points, and a layer of the patients’ own skin might do just that.
