Some CIS Applications Running Slowly Due to Degraded Databases

CIS has been troubleshooting an issue with our backend SQL infrastructure.  We are currently working with Microsoft to resolve problems, but at the current time, we are still seeing queries to our SQL databases running in a degraded state.

Applications may load properly, but database queries may run slowly or time out.

The affected applications could include:

The problems reported regarding Remedy this morning are related to this ongoing issue.

The issue with the SQL server has been resolved.

CISO Memo: Cyber Security Awareness Month 2011

IPTV and VFNow Service Outage Tue 9/27 4AM – 8AM

In order to solve a production problem on the IPTV server, CIS will be performing maintenance tomorrow, September 27 from 4AM to 8AM.  This action will cause a service outage on all IPTV and VFNow video services.  We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Your Edge on Encryption

Guardian Edge inscribed on a shieldCIS has purchased licenses for the encryption software Guardian Edge and is currently making preparations for a limited release late fall/early winter. Guardian Edge will provide full disk encryption for all data — whether user files, swap files, system files, hidden files, etc. — stored on a PC or Intel-based Mac. A typical Guardian Edge user would be a faculty or staff member who travels (on or off campus) with a laptop storing personally identifiable information (PII).

Digital Certs Update

InCommon CertificatesIn the last edition of Secure IT!, we announced that CIS would soon be adopting a new digital cert service. That service will become available the end of the semester.

Requests will be managed by the office of Computing Accounts and Passwords (CAP) and should be initiated by filing a Remedy HD ticket (Category  “Digital Certificate”).

Say Hello to SSL-VPN

On August 18th, CIS began the transition to SSL-VPN, a new way to securely connect to Brown’s network when off-campus using VPN (Virtual Private Network). During the transition period, as the new service gears up in the Brown environment, the current Cisco client will continue to be available, to be decommissioned sometime later in the academic year.

Eduroam @ Brown: Education’s Global SSID

Eduroam loggoBrown University is joining a growing group of institutions who share a secure world-wide roaming access service that was developed for the international research and education community. Currently in the testing phase, plans are for Brown to become an active member by the end of November.
