Dear Friends and colleagues,
Cholera has arrived in Milot. We are being hit hard. The number of cholera patients has gone from 2 to 30 to over 60 in a matter of days and is sure to rise further. We are back in crisis mode and need volunteers to care for these victims.

The tents have been converted to an isolation ward. We need nurses, 10-15 per week, particularly those skilled with IV access. We would love to have several physicians per week, particularly internists, family practice, pediatricians, ER, critical care specialists. The care will be labor intensive but simple – oral and IV hydration, managing electrolytes.

If you are able and willing to make another trip to Hopital Sacre Coeur, we need you now. If you have friends and colleagues that have the skills we need, please ask them to consider going. Deb Motyl is in charge of scheduling and travel arrangements. Please send her the following items:

1. An updated CMMB form
2. A 2×2 picture such as a copy
3. If you will be a first-time volunteer, please also send a copy of your license and completed volunteer information form.

Attention all Graduate and Professional Students interested in Global Policy:

The Duke Program on Global Policy and Governance in Geneva, Switzerland is now accepting applications for its 2011 cohort.

Who: Past program participants include graduate and professional students from all disciplines, including law, medicine, public policy, international affairs, business, environmental studies, and other graduate or professional students interested in issues of global policy and governance.

What: The Program on Global Policy and Governance offers students unparalleled access to internships in Geneva-based institutions,  the opportunity to learn directly from experts working to resolve some the world’s biggest challenges, and a community of fellow students from around the world.
The program includes:

** A 10-12 week policy internship in Geneva
** Events throughout the summer providing opportunities to socialize and network with other policy interns and  experts
** A choice of one of the following four intensive, weeklong courses:

1) Environment and Sustainable Development
2) Global Health Fellows: Health Policy in a Globalizing World
3) Global Economic Governance and Development
4) Humanitarian Assistance and Human Rights

When: A typical internship spans between May 15 and August 15, 2011.  The course week will take place in late  June or early July. There is flexibility on the start and ending dates for individual students.

The Northwestern University Center for Global Engagement is excited to share with you a distinctive, credit-bearing study abroad and experiential learning program called the Global Engagement Summer Institute (GESI). GESI begins at Northwestern’s Chicago campus with intensive pre-departure coursework in community development and international leadership. Students then venture abroad to intern in interdisciplinary teams of four to five at community-based nonprofits in Bolivia, India, Nicaragua, or Uganda. At the end of the summer, students from all four sites return to Chicago for a Final Learning Summit, where they share geographical experiences, reflect on their learning, and explore how to transform their GESI summer into a lifetime of global engagement.  Students receive two credits (equivalent to six semester hours) from Northwestern upon completion.  For more information see gesi.northwestern.edu

The Lifespan/Tufts/Brown Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) is pleased to announce a new funding opportunity for international researchers collaborating with CFAR faculty members.

The CFAR International Developmental Research Program offers initial and pilot awards to investigators in Kenya, India, Ghana and the Philippines.  Each of these focus countries offer an existing academic affiliation with either Brown or Tufts University, or both, in the academic institutions noted below:

In 2010, Accordia presented the first Merle A. Sande Health Leadership Award to Dr. W.D. Francois Venter, senior director of the HIV Management Cluster in the Reproductive Health and HIV Research Unit (RHRU) at the University of Witwatersrand, for his remarkable knowledge and experience, dedication to his patients, and resounding impact on his country’s fight against HIV.
