The Global Health Council’s 38th Annual International Conference on Global Health:
Securing a Healthier Future in a Changing World

If current demographic changes continue, the average age will be older in most parts of the world than it is today, more people will live in cities, and population growth will have slowed throughout the world except in Africa. These trends naturally result in changes in the burden of disease, most notably a transition from infectious to non-communicable diseases, from acute to chronic disease.

The Council seeks five types of abstract this year:

Recognizing Emerging African Leaders in Infectious Disease

Accordia Global Health Foundation is pleased to announce the second annual Merle A. Sande Health Leadership Award and to invite nominations and applications.

The award was established in memory of Dr. Merle Sande, a co-founder of Accordia and a renowned infectious diseases specialist known for his enthusiasm for work and life, his joy of teaching, and his outstanding leadership abilities. In 2010, Accordia presented the first Merle A. Sande Health Leadership Award to Dr. W.D. Francois Venter, senior director of the HIV Management Cluster in the Reproductive Health and HIV Research Unit (RHRU) at the University of Witwatersrand, for his remarkable knowledge and experience, dedication to his patients, and resounding impact on his country’s fight against HIV.

In 2011, Accordia will present the second annual Merle A. Sande Health Leadership Award to an emerging African leader who has contributed to the field of infectious disease and embodies Dr. Sande’s passion, intellectual drive, and spirit. The successful candidate will be a young leader with remarkable personal accomplishments in teaching, research, and/or clinical science.

Nominations and applications will be accepted through 31 January 2011, and the award will be announced in April 2011. The awardee will be invited to lead two (2) days of rounds, lectures, and a keynote address at the Infectious Diseases Institute of Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda in May 2011.

February 11, 2011:  Deadline for Brown Global Health BIARI applications

Dear Colleagues,   International Affairs at Brown University has announced the third annual Brown International Advanced Research Institutes (BIARI). In 2009 and 2010, Brown University inaugurated the BIARI, a major faculty development initiative to convene high-level academic Institutes on Brown’s campus each summer. The Massachusetts General Hospital Center for Global Health (CGH) is pleased to announce two fellowships in global health: The Durant Fellowship in Refugee Medicine and the MGH Global Health Fellowship.

All applications are due by February 21, 2011

The Durant Fellowship in Refugee Medicine:

The Durant Fellowship in Refugee Medicine sponsors health care professionals to serve refugee populations and victims of complex humanitarian disasters. Fellowships include field work for three months up to one year. This Fellowship fosters in its recipients a sense of commitment to populations in distress and to provide education to aid in the prevention and treatment of disease in refugee populations. Fellows will have the opportunity to work with one of the nongovernmental organizations affiliated with the Durant Fellowship such as American Refugee Committee, or Concern Worldwide. The Durant Fellowship is open to all health care providers; physicians, nurses, psychologists, social workers, physical therapists, occupational therapists and dietitians are all eligible for the fellowship. Physicians are required to have completed residency by July 2011 and all other allied health professionals must have attained at least 3 years clinical experience prior to application.

MGH Fellowship in Global Health:

The MGH Global Health Fellowship is designed to provide up to one year of support to members of the MGH medical staff in any discipline to conduct one year of research, teaching/training, or clinical care activities in one of the CGH initial programmatic areas of focus: Global Mental Health, Disaster and Humanitarian Relief, and Global Primary Care. Applications that focus on significant domestic or global needs, offer capacity building and training, propose practical and cost effective approaches, contain clear deliverables and time lines, and involve inter-institutional or interdepartmental collaboration are particularly encouraged. The Global Health Fellowship is open to members of the junior medical staff, including physicians who will have completed residency by July 2011, clinical fellows, junior faculty, nursing staff who are at least 3 years post-licensure, physical and occupational therapists, and other medical staff involved in health care delivery. Applicants must not have yet reached the faculty position of Associate Professor.

Global Impact Fellows participate daily with local doctors to eliminate patient barriers to care and to facilitate comprehensive year-round eye care for patients living in extreme poverty.  They assist with patient education, visual acuity screening, patient intake, distributing the glasses and medication prescribed by the local eye doctors, and other important support tasks.  They also have the opportunity to observe the surgeries provided by the local doctors. Additionally, Global Impact Fellows may participate in the Global Impact Lab, an optional program for those interested in pursuing global health research. For example, current Global Impact Fellows are pursuing research studies about medication management, the use of visual resources for patient education, traditional medicine practices, and patient barriers to care.

What do Global Impact Fellows say? “I gained a vast basin of knowledge not only about eye health, but also on the healthcare infrastructure, patient interactions, and management systems of the developing world. Reading about health issues in the news or in class became stark reality during my summer in Dhenkanal, and I now aim to reinvigorate my efforts to study and contribute to the field of international health. Responsibilities
• Assist the Finance Director with general accounting functions including, but not limited to: processing accounts receivable, managing month-end general ledger close and associated analysis, preparing financial statements and other ad hoc reports as requested, inventory valuations and management.
• Lead the customer service and finished good, small order sales function by: fielding customer inquiries, soliciting shipping quotes, preparing small order quotes, coordinating timely shipments and associated documentation, overseeing follow-up and invoice completion, and other related tasks.

Qualifications
Required:

The Executive Director coordinates the efforts of Project Muso’s 73 part time, full time, and volunteer team members, leads and implements Project Muso’s fundraising strategy for growth and scale-up, and cultivates key partnerships. Project Muso is in the midst of piloting its strategy in Yirimadjo, Mali, an area of 20,000 people. With encouraging results from the first years of its pilot, Project Muso is planning toward strategic scale-up and replication in the years to come. As Project Muso’s primary organizational administrator outside of Mali, the ED plays a central role in guiding Project Muso’s growth and development at this critical juncture for the organization and the thousands of community partners it serves.

The ED will split their time between Project Muso’s field site and field office in Mali and Project Muso’s office at Still Harbor in Boston. The full-time position requires a commitment and passion for social justice work. The ideal candidate will be ready to take on new and unexpected challenges while providing consistent, strategic leadership. The Lifespan/Tufts/Brown Center for AIDS Research (CFAR) is pleased to announce a new funding opportunity for international researchers collaborating with CFAR faculty members.

The CFAR International Developmental Research Program offers initial and pilot awards to investigators in Kenya, India, Ghana and the Philippines.  Each of these focus countries offer an existing academic affiliation with either Brown or Tufts University, or both, in the academic institutions noted below:

·        Christian Medical College – Vellore, India

·        University of Ghana – Ghana

·        University of the Philippines – Philippines

The Global Health Council’s 38th Annual International Conference on Global Health:
Securing a Healthier Future in a Changing World

If current demographic changes continue, the average age will be older in most parts of the world than it is today, more people will live in cities, and population growth will have slowed throughout the world except in Africa. These trends naturally result in changes in the burden of disease, most notably a transition from infectious to non-communicable diseases, from acute to chronic disease.

The Council seeks five types of abstract this year:

Recognizing Emerging African Leaders in Infectious Disease

Accordia Global Health Foundation is pleased to announce the second annual Merle A. Sande Health Leadership Award and to invite nominations and applications.

The award was established in memory of Dr. Merle Sande, a co-founder of Accordia and a renowned infectious diseases specialist known for his enthusiasm for work and life, his joy of teaching, and his outstanding leadership abilities. In 2010, Accordia presented the first Merle A. Sande Health Leadership Award to Dr. W.D. Francois Venter, senior director of the HIV Management Cluster in the Reproductive Health and HIV Research Unit (RHRU) at the University of Witwatersrand, for his remarkable knowledge and experience, dedication to his patients, and resounding impact on his country’s fight against HIV.

In 2011, Accordia will present the second annual Merle A. Sande Health Leadership Award to an emerging African leader who has contributed to the field of infectious disease and embodies Dr. Sande’s passion, intellectual drive, and spirit. The successful candidate will be a young leader with remarkable personal accomplishments in teaching, research, and/or clinical science.

Nominations and applications will be accepted through 31 January 2011, and the award will be announced in April 2011. The awardee will be invited to lead two (2) days of rounds, lectures, and a keynote address at the Infectious Diseases Institute of Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda in May 2011.

Dear Colleagues,   International Affairs at Brown University has announced the third annual Brown International Advanced Research Institutes (BIARI). In 2009 and 2010, Brown University inaugurated the BIARI, a major faculty development initiative to convene high-level academic Institutes on Brown’s campus each summer. Responsibilities
