- Scholarships enable students (undergraduate, MPH, medical and PhD), fellows and trainees to work on global health research for a minimum of 8 weeks at an international site. IRB approval is not required upon submission; however, successful applicants MUST obtain approval before the funds can be disbursed. Awardees will receive up to $3,500. - Framework Faculty Curriculum Development Grant applications are due November 1, 2011.
- The Framework in Global Health and the Office of International Affairs will co-sponsor grants to faculty members developing new courses or revising existing ones to include global health content. Past grant recipients have invited guest speakers, added readings, and developed initiatives to bring global health content to the subject matter of a course. The grants are intended to incorporate global health subject matter into seminars and courses that previously had none, as opposed to enhancing seminars and courses that already include global health content.
- The grants have a $4,000 maximum and will help cover the cost of students who assist instructors in course revision, travel and related expenses for guest lecturers, as well as other costs entailed with the integration of global health content into these courses. All regular members of the Brown faculty are eligible to apply (see the Handbook of Academic Administration for clarification on Regular and Non-Regular Faculty.) The Lifespan/Tufts/Brown Center for AIDS Research is announcing a Request for Applications for the Fall 2011 Developmental Grant Program.
The CFAR Developmental Grants Program provides support for three types of AIDS biomedical and behavioral research projects:
The goal of the CFAR developmental program is to enable the grantee to obtain sufficient original data to achieve NIH research funding in his/her area of investigation. Applications should include cross-campus (Tufts and Brown) or interdepartmental collaborations and/or utilization of services from more than one core (HIV in Women & Underserved Populations, Prevention, Nutrition Metabolism & GI, Biostatistics, and Retrovirology Services).
All applicants must have a full-time appointment at either Brown University or Tufts University at the rank of Assistant Professor or greater.

October 17, 2011: Deadline for Fulbright/Fogarty Fellowships in Public Health
Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowships in Public Health offered in partnership between the Fulbright Program and the Fogarty International Center of the U.S. National Institute of Health have been established to promote the expansion of research in public health and clinical research in resource-limited settings. The Fulbright-Fogarty Fellowship was inaugurated in July 2011 with four fellows in Sub-Saharan Africa (Botswana, Malawi, and South Africa). The Fellowship has been modified and expanded with the 2012-13 application cycle to include countries in Asia and Latin America.
All awards are for 9 months required at the overseas site. Awards will carry the benefits of Fulbright Full Grants to the country of assignment. The Fogarty International Center, NIH, will provide support to the research training site and orientation of the fellows at NIH.
U.S. students who are currently enrolled in medical school or a graduate-level program and who are interested in global health can apply for this Fellowship. The basic requirements and process for applying for the Fulbright-Fogarty Program are the same as for any Fulbright U.S. Student Study/Research Grant.
PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING REGARDING THE APPLICATION:
1. Review the Country Summary for details on country specific eligibility requirements and research placements. Degree requirements, research focus, and affiliation vary by country.
2. Select one country to which to apply.
3. In the Online Application question 3. SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY, select Fulbright-Fogarty Award. You will only be considered for the Fulbright-Fogarty Award.
4. A letter of affiliation IS NOT required nor applicable for Fulbright-Fogarty Award applicants.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
Even though, in most cases, grantees will be working in an English-speaking environment, language preferences for a specific country will apply; however, they may be relaxed somewhat. That is, if host country language skills are required, then Fulbright-Fogarty applicants should have begun study of the language and have a language plan for the months prior to beginning a grant. The Foreign Language Evaluation should be conducted when the language level is beyond the basic level.
If host country language skills are not required and the applicant has little or no knowledge of the language, then applicants may wish to consider how they can undertake language study prior to the grant start or during the grant and mention this in the Statement of Grant Purpose.
STATEMENT OF GRANT PURPOSE
The following are some basic guidelines as to what you should include in your Statement of Grant Purpose, along with any other information you deem relevant:
Why you have chosen the particular country and project;
Remember, too, that since this is a Fulbright grant, applicants should describe ways that they anticipate engaging in the local community. This can be included in the Statement of Grant Purpose or in the Personal Statement.

October 17, 2011: Deadline for 2012 Creative and Novel Ideas in HIV Research (CNIHR) program
The International AIDS Society (IAS), in partnership with the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the NIH-supported Centers for AIDS Research (CFAR), launched a new round of the joint research grant programme, Creative and Novel Ideas in HIV Research (CNIHR). The CNIHR programme supports projects intended to advance the scientific understanding of HIV by exploring new approaches to pressing scientific questions on such issues as the long-term survival of individuals with HIV infection, mechanisms behind establishment of viral reservoirs, new approaches for the prevention of HIV transmission, and innovative models of health care delivery. It is designed to promote innovative research and new ideas from early-stage investigators whose primary focus has previously been in fields of scientific inquiry other than HIV/AIDS. It aims to recruit and train tomorrow’s leading HIV researchers from across many areas of science, whose work will benefit not only HIV, but other fields of research as well. The first step of the competitive application process is open on the CNIHR website (www.cnihr.org) and will close on 17 October 2011. Applicants will be asked to complete a two-step process to assess the quality of their research projects. Awardees will be selected by mid-April 2012. Successful applicants will be invited to the XIX International AIDS Conference (AIDS 2012), in Washington D.C. 22-27 July 2012, where they will be officially awarded. They will also have the opportunity to attend an HIV orientation seminar with leading experts and take part in a networking session during the conference. November 17, 2011: Proposal Deadline for Gates Foundation Grant Opportunity
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is now accepting grant proposals for Round 8 of Grand Challenges Explorations, an initiative to encourage innovative and unconventional global health and development solutions. Applicants can be at any experience level; in any discipline; and from any organization, including colleges and universities, government laboratories, research institutions, non-profit organizations and for profit companies.
Grant proposals are being accepted online until November 17, 2011 on the following topics:

* NEW – Design new approaches to optimize immunization systems
