March 11, 2012: application deadline for HIVCorps Public Health Fellowship 2012-2013

Established in 1999, the Centre for Infectious Disease Research in Zambia (CIDRZ) is a Zambian non-profit company with a broad academic mission in health program implementation, clinical and outcomes research, and training. The organization has multiple U. S. partner institutions, including the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and Vanderbilt University. CIDRZ’s topical focal areas include HIV/AIDS; maternal-child health; cervical cancer; and tuberculosis. Our faculty and collaborators are among the world’s leading thinkers on issues related to HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention programs in developing countries.

Now entering its ninth year, the CIDRZ HIVCorps initiative has trained over 100 expatriate and Zambian fellows. The fellowship provides the opportunity to gain important field experience in areas such as (1) program implementation and management, (2) clinical trials, (3) community outreach and support, (4) clinical care quality improvement systems, and (5) data management and outcomes analysis.

The HIVCorps fellowship is targeted at healthcare professionals who wish to gain international experience. Prior participants have included medical students who are able to delay their studies for a year, recent nursing and MPH graduates, and university graduates with substantial skills or experience. Applicants with experience in project management, public health, qualitative research, community outreach, study coordination, data management, statistical analysis, IT, scientific writing, and laboratory work are particularly encouraged to apply. Previous international experience will strengthen your application, but is not a requirement. Five fellows will be selected for 2012 2013. Work will be based in Lusaka, Zambia, though travel to various parts of the country may be required.

Duration: 10-12 months (with allowances made for medical / graduate school interviews if needed). All applicants must be available to start in early July 2012.

Compensation: Fellows receive a monthly stipend of $1500 to cover travel to and from Zambia and basic living expenses (Please note: airfares to and from Zambia are not paid for separately by the program). Group housing, costs related to program activities, and local and emergency evacuation insurance will be provided.

March 2, 2012: abstract deadline for Brown Public Health Research Day

This year’s Public Health Research Day will be April 17 from 1:30 – 5:30 pm and will be held in Andrews Dining Hall. We are pleased that our Barnes Lecturer for this year will be Kelly Brownell, PhD, Professor of Psychology at Yale University, where he also serves as Professor of Epidemiology and Public Health and as Director of the Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity. Dr. Brownell will lecture on “Changing the American Diet: Do We Have the Guts?”. The Barnes Lecture will begin at 4:00 pm preceded by the annual poster session that will begin at 1:30.

The Call for Abstracts can be found here and provides full details. We will again provide awards for posters in several categories including 1) best undergraduate poster, 2) best MPH poster, and 3) best doctoral student or trainee poster.

Abstracts are due before March 2, 2012. Senior Public Health Program researchers will review abstracts, and make selections for presentation. Authors will be notified by March 20, 2012.
