A Revolution in Cartography

Recent JCB Fellow Joshua Jelly-Schapiro has just published an essay in Harper’s Magazine on the confluence of maps and technology, with a close look at Google. He starts off his article with an account of his visit to David Rumsey and his astonishing map library. Rumsey, who is a past member of the JCB Board of Governors, has turned some 33,000 of his maps into high resolution scans available on his website www.davidrumsey.com.  Jelly-Schapiro considers both the past and the future of map-making in his wide-ranging essay.
