Requests – Week January 23, 2006

Tuesday, January 24th, 2006
  • OCRA upload problem – TA for PS148 (Peter R…) reported a problem uploading scanned articles, probably because of large file size. After checking with Shelley and Bart, I advised him of preferred settings (300 dpi, greyscale), but suggested that he bring in articles for the libray to scan if they were not needed in the first week.
Submitted: Referred by Shelley Lonergan, 1/24/2006
    Status: Done (bb)
  • Links to illiad server broken – Broken links from the DL database page http://dl.lib.brown.edu/databases.html (and also from Collections A to Z):
“European and American Paintings Collected by General Rush Hawkins” http://128.148.7.229:591/amb
    “Gay men’s pulp literature” http://128.148.7.229:591/gaypulp
    “Persian, mohgul…” http://128.148.7.229:591/dbminassian/default.htm
I checked with Patrick Yott, who said it was the illiad server and that I should contact Joe, which I did.
    Submitted Ann Dodge, 1/24/06
Status: Pending; reported to Joe (bb) 1/24/06
  • Library Resource Guides (MySQL/PHP)
On the Resource Guides, I have been wondering about the following:
    1. Tracking the hits on each RG.
    2. Adding my quarterly newsletters to each department as content on the RG.
Submitted by Lee Pedersen, January 27, 2006 8:09 AM
Status: Birkin is working on picard web stats; newsletter will be added to News & Announcements section (Lee thinks rss will be beyond some faculty.)

  • SFX Menu Request
Direct import to RefWorks is available, but many people use Endnote and an import into endnote would be very useful.
There is information available in the Ex Libris documentation – Advanced SFX Management.ppt (Olybris Seminar)
Submitted by Brown Grad Student (Bio Med) via SFX Feedback Form, 1/25/2006 12:58 PM
    Status: pending
  • Library Web Changes - When time allows, please take down the following Web pages:

    http://www.brown.edu/Facilities/University_Library/Catalog/Units.html

    http://www.brown.edu/Facilities/University_Library/Catalog/Directory.html

    http://www.brown.edu/Facilities/University_Library/Catalog/Functions.html

Links to the above pages should be removed from:
    – http://www.brown.edu/Facilities/University_Library/Catalog/index.html and from:
    – http://www.brown.edu/Facilities/University_Library/contacts.html (also from the contacts page, remove the hyperlink for Technical Services and the entire line for “Acquisitions”)
Also, please remove the Technical Services “Web Site” link from:
And remove the hyperlink for “staff” at:

Requests – Week of January 9, 2006

Thursday, January 12th, 2006
  • Link to Coll Dev Policy from LRG (MySQL/PHP)
Rosemary mounted my collection development policy for Public Humanities some time ago, but I notice that it’s not linked to the Subject Specialists page. Could we do that? The link is:
    http://www.brown.edu/Facilities/University_Library/collections/colldev/subjects/publichumanities.html
Submitted by Holly Snyder, 1/10/2006 4:50 PM
Status: fixed (File name needs to be entered in eresources.programs table – RLC checked all and will keep them up to date.)

  • Josiah Error Report Form
“…the Josiah catalogue contains frequent errors and omissions (many of these, of course, come ‘upstream’ from vendors), and it would be helpful if there were an electronic way of bringing these errors to the attention of librarians.”
[My understanding from previous conversations with Ken is that he would like to have a web form available directly from the Josiah screen; going to the cataloging services web page or clicking on “ask a librarian” and looking for a person to email to is not quite the service he is looking for. - DC]
Submitted by Prof. Ken Haynes (DLR for Comparative Literature) in a letter to Harriette.
    Status: pending

  • Josiah – Difficulty Locating Films
“…films might be organized and catalogued more effectively; it is sometimes difficult to determine which films the library holds and where it holds them.”
Submitted by Prof. Ken Haynes (DLR for Comparative Literature) in a letter to Harriette.
Status: Discussions underway with Tech Services re cataloging aspect; BB is working on a footer that would link to the video list (among other things).

  • Josiah Request Function
Request button does not appear for Rock Storage Cutter and Rock Star.
Submitted by Charlie Flynn in person, 1/12/06

JMR Activities – Week of January 9, 2006

Thursday, January 12th, 2006
  • Found reference on the IUG listserv to a wwwoption that was introduced post-silver that allows the catalog to display a permanent link to a record. The wwwoption statement is:

    ICON_RECORDLINK=<div class=”bibRecordLink”><a id=”recordnum”
    href=”%s”>Permanent link to this record</a></div>

  • Contacted Adam Brin of Bryn Mawr (and a former Brown student) about the Tri-Library’s use of RSS feeds for their New Titles List. Of particular interest is the fact that they seem to do a daily automated export from their III catalog to MySQL. Adam will share his perl scripts.
  • Helin Annual Conference, 1/10
  • DigiTool Demo and lunch with Michael Kaplan and Suzanne Conboy
  • Met with DC re: Slavic approval plan
  • Submitted information about our approval plan needs to Kristine Bushnell of Russian Press Service since we had heard nothing from Russia Online since sending him DC’s follow-up questions on 12/2/05. [He did finally respond on 1/11/06 with a promise to get feedback to us by early next week.] Kristine Bushnell sent a very full response the day after my initial email – see continuation below.

Requests week of January 2, 2006

  • Annex requesting. No request button appearing in Josiah for Annex serials.
    Submitted by Mark Shelton, 1/4/05
Status Fixed. BB (request rules modification)

  • Library Resource Guides – E-Books (MySQL/PHP) – I’m confused about the e-books linking. I chose a few packages and get this message “You have linked to these E-Book packages –
    ebrary,
    Knovel Library,
    xreferplus” –
but I see just the full list of e-books packages on my Biology page.
Submitted by Frank Kellerman, January 03, 2006 12:48 PM
Status Fixed. jmr (forgot to upload revised public display page)

  • Add “form” code to Josiah “You will recall that the 2 of us created a new code for ebooks for the acquisitions fixed field FORM. It looked like it went fine and that it was all set, but subsequently it did not appear. When I tried to repeat the process, it failed again to permanently add the code. The code was “6″ and it is to stand for Ebooks. Could you ask Innovative to add the code, or if you want see if you get it to take yourself. Thanks.
    Submitted: Steve E. Thompson, 1/4/2005
Status: Done. BB (I was able to add the code using telnet, but not millennium. I will report this to III if/when it comes up again)

  • Brown Web Problem
Can you let CIS know that the dates on the web stats page have not been updated to include 2006 – http://www.brown.edu/cgi-local/parse-stats.pl
Submitted by Ron Fark, January 05, 2006 9:56 PM
Status: reported to Bob Morse who fixed the problem

  • Library Resource Guides (MySQL/PHP)
I noticed that the Library News link on the resource guides takes the user to the Web Services blog, rather than general Library News. [oops!]
Submitted by DC, 1/7/2006 4:30 PM
    Status: fixed (jmr)

  • Library Resource Guides (MySQL/PHP)
I got into the database and added Art (N) and Music (M) to the storage lists… I’m not sure how to put them in their proper alphabetical place.
Submitted by RLC, Fri 1/6/2006 11:12 AM
    Status: pending
  • Video Tutorial Links (Library Web)
We would like to see more links to the video tutorial. Below are suggestions from SLT and Michael. I would like to see the video a featured link the first month of each semester if possible.
    – Under Research in menu, retitle Getting Started to Video Tutorial or Getting Started with the VT or?
[changed image to "Getting Started Videos" - jmr]
    – Add VT link to full Research page
    – Add to FAQ in menu: sub menu and on full page under How Can I?
    – Make it a permanent(?) featured link or list it there first month of each semester
    – Add in Quick Links, under Research (getting started VT or some such phrase)
    – A-Z: add under tutorial (for research) and video tutorial (for research)

BB – week of January 2, 2006

Wednesday, January 4th, 2006

flash project - showed Protean Figure to web services staff and a few others;
Josiah list cleanup - Asked all staff to review Josiah lists by January 13, and to identify those still needed with an asterisk.
Josiah Release 2006LE - Thursday, January 5. – Announcement was made on Morning Mail and Carberry in advance. I was in contact with Innovative (Barbara Herzog, Monica Ertel) and Donna Buxbaum also. Our previous two upgrades required manual rebuilding of files, so I wanted to be prepared. Unfortunately, there were problems again. The upgrade should have been finished at about 8:30 a.m. (thanks to Donna’s early start). Some initial intervention by III staff resulted in the OPAC and telnet staff functionality to be available at about 9:00 am. However, Millennium access was not restored until 1:00 pm, and staff were advised they could use it at about 1:30 pm. I will be meeting with Monica Ertel, Head of Customer Service, at Midwinter.
Technology meeting - HH, FKD, Patrick Y, Mark S, Jean, me – Interesting first meeting of what will become a monthly Technology group. HH is interested in understanding where overlaps and gaps may be occurring. First step will be to identify on-going projects.
Josiah requesting modification - Gateway is planning to allow requesting of “available” books from Rock, Sci and Orwig, beginning Monday, January 16. Met with Steven, Bart and Ron to go over details.
E-bookplates - Met with Pat Putney and Sam Mizer – Pat is working on assigning endowments to LC classes – I am to see if Jean, Rosemary and/or Dominique can help with this process – I am beginning to experiment with using Josiah to create lists of items based on order records that could be used to associated individual items with endowments – I spoke with Linda G re possible fields to us – Still need to do demonstrations of various ways to display and link bookplates in Josiah.
BRU download BI116 - Heard from Olga Nabutovsky who has the changes to our student download ready for testing; my rquest for the modification of the download was made last summer, and I knew it would be a while before they got to it; I will review this with Steven L. and make we’ll make need adjustments to Josiah patron types
Consulted by Boston College – Spent about one-half hour talking with Margie Fiels of Boston College regarding remote storage. They are well underway in the planning process. I also suggested she talke with Eric Shoaf and Steven Lavallee.
