New Study Area in Rockefeller Library

The Library will be holding a small ribbon-cutting ceremony at 4pm this Thursday, Feb. 8 to celebrate the opening of a new study area in the Rockefeller Library. Located on Level A of the Rock, right next to the Absolute Quiet Room, the space used to house only the rarely used printed catalog cards (all now available via Josiah). Now the room is a bright, open environment for students to work — with comfortable chairs, laptop hookups and great views of downtown Providence. University Librarian Harriette Hemmasi will welcome students and UCS vice-president Tristan Freeman will cut the ribbon to officially open the room. Drop by to take a look and grab a cupcake!
Venus in Chains: Representations of Sex and Slavery in the Caribbean Basin, Feb. 9 – Mar. 15
An Inaugural Exhibition of the Caribbean Initiative, Center for Latin American Studies Curated by Patricia Figueroa and Jennifer Lambe Sponsored by the Center for Latin American Studies
The exhibit will focus on representations of slave women in the Caribbean basin from the 18th and 19th century, particularly in the accounts of European travellers and residents of the region. Highlighting the variety of stereotypes about slave women that were prominent in European racial ideology, the works will demonstrate the ways in which slavery intertwined with sexual desire, particularly of white men for slave women, and reinforced the subjugation of women in this system. “Venus in Chains” will open February 9 at the John Hay Library and remain open through March 15. The library hours are Monday-Friday, 9-5. The John Hay Library is located at 20 Prospect St., Providence, RI. For more information contact Patricia_Figueroa@brown.edu.
