Luke Woloszyn (PhD, 2011) and David Sheinberg have published an article in Neuron that reveals mechanisms of object recognition. In their work, they demonstrated that output (excitatory) and intrinsic (inhibitory) neurons in inferotemporal cortex (IT) exhibited different neural code for familiar (excitatory cells) and novel (inhibitory) visual objects. The work suggests that inhibitory IT neurons contribute to shaping the responses of IT output neurons.
