The proposed wall, marked in red, deliberately left open the border regions near the Rio Grande, as well as particularly treacherous desert and mountain terrain. Because migrants would be forced to contend with the dangerous elements in these gaps, natural barriers seemed to offer an equally effective anti-immigration plan. Indeed, almost 450 migrants died while trying to cross in 2014 alone.
