Visiting the Institute
The Joukowsky Institute is located in Rhode Island Hall at 60 George Street (at the corner of George Street and Prospect Street, on Brown University’s Main Green), in Providence, Rhode Island.
We are a short walk away from downtown Providence, about 45 minutes drive or train-ride from Boston, and about 3 hours from New York. Amtrak runs to Providence from both New York and Boston, as does Greyhound. From Boston, visitors can also take the MBTA Commuter Rail train or the Peter Pan bus.
For those driving to Brown, parking can sometimes be an issue. There is metered parking on Prospect Street, close to the Institute. Unmetered spaces are slightly farther away, but are often challenging to find. Brown has one visitor parking lot (located at the intersection of Power and Thayer Streets), which charges $3.00 per hour, or $15.00 for a full day. (See GoogleMaps).
By plane, visitors can fly into TF Green airport, which is about 15 minutes away from the campus, or into Boston’s Logan Airport. Directions from each follow:
From TF Green, you may either take a taxi or the Airport Limousine shuttle (Brown University’s campus is located about 10 miles from the TF Green Airport):
The most economical transportation to the Brown campus is Airport Limousine’s shuttle service (401-737-2868). A shuttle leaves every hour on the hour and is available from 5 a.m. until 7 p.m. No reservations are needed. Tickets are $11.00 per person, and can be purchased on the lower level of the airport near the exit close to Baggage Claim. The shuttle van will take you directly to Brown’s Faunce Arch, arriving at 28 minutes past the hour. To return to the airport by shuttle, catch the shuttle at Faunce Arch at 28 minutes past the hour to arrive at TF Green at 55 minutes past the hour. Tickets for the return trip can be purchased from the shuttle driver, and cost $11.00 per person.
One-way taxi fare is approximately $30. Taxis can be found by walking out the lower level of the airport, by baggage claim, to the outer curb. Taxis are available 24 hours per day.
From Logan International Airport (Boston), you can either take a Peter Pan bus, or the train:
The Peter Pan Bus (401-331-7500, 888-331-7500 (toll-free) or 800-343-9999 (toll-free)) will cost $22 one-way to Providence, or $40 round-trip. Buses run on the half-hour between 7:30 am and 11:30 pm (leaving Logan at 7:30 am, 9:30 am, 10:30 am, 11:30 am, 12:30 pm, 1:30 pm, 2:30 pm, 3:30 pm, 4:30 pm, 5:30 pm, 7:30 pm, 9:30 pm, and 11:30 pm). Buses circulate throughout the terminal area, so can be caught at any terminal. The Peter Pan Bus will drop you off at Kennedy Plaza, which is just a short (uphill) walk from the Institute. Returning to the airport, the Peter Pan Bus leaves the Kennedy Plaza terminal at 15 minutes past the hour, between 6:15 am and 9:15 pm, arriving at Logan one hour and 45 minutes later (departure times: 6:15 am, 7:15 am, 8:15 am, 9:15 am, 11:15 am, 12:15 pm, 1:15 pm, 2:15 pm, 3:15 pm, 5:15 pm, 7:15 pm, 9:15 pm). The Peter Pan Bus schedule can be viewed online, at https://www.peterpanbus.com/ (select “Boston Logan Airport” and “Providence Kennedy Plaza”).
To take the train from Logan, you need to first take the Silver Line bus, operated by the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (better known as the MBTA or the “T”), to South Station . Tickets are $2.00 cash or credit, purchased from the kiosk on the baggage claim level of the airport. The Silver Line runs every 5-12 minutes, between 5:30 am and 12:15 am, daily and stops at all terminals on the baggage claim level. It takes approximately 20 minutes to reach South Station from Logan. For a full schedule of the Silver Line, visit https://www.mbta.com/schedules_and_maps/subway/lines/?route=SILVER and click on the Silver Line Schedule icon at the top right.
At South Station, you can catch either the Commuter Rail or Amtrak to Providence. The Commuter Rail costs $10.50 one-way. For a full schedule of the Commuter Rail, visit https://www.mbta.com/schedules_and_maps/rail/lines/?route=PROVSTOU or call 1-800-392-6100. Amtrak costs between $15 and $49 one-way from South Station to Providence. The full schedule for Amtrak can be found at https://www.amtrak.com or by calling 1-800-872-7245. From the train station, it is a very short taxi ride to Brown (or even an easy walk).
