Adam Blumenthal is the Virtual Reality Artist-in-Residence with the Granoff Center for the Creative Arts and the Center for Computation and Visualization at Brown University. In this project, Blumenthal creates an interactive VR experience detailing the events, artifacts and locations of the Gaspee Affair, when Rhode Island colonists attacked and set fire to the British ship HMS Gaspee in Narragansett Bay. The burning of the ship and its aftermath deepened the divide between British and colonies leading up to the revolutionary war.
Blumenthal speaks to the strengths and weaknesses of virtual reality as a medium and what we might look forward to in the near future.
