Visiting the Haffenreffer’s “Northern Horizons, Global Visions” exhibition made me realize something about the museum, indeed about museums more generally. They are built upon layers of accumulation. Understanding how the layers accumulated—the depositional process, as archaeologists would say—helps us understand the museum’s past. And understanding the way that those layers are excavated and put to use helps us understand the museum’s future.
