The East Village Other was a counter-cultural newspaper founded in New York in 1965 by Walter Bowart, Ishmael Reed (who named the newspaper), Allen Katzman, Dan Rattiner, Sherry Needham and John Wilcock. The paper was one of the first underground newspapers in the United States. At its peak the paper had roughly 60,000 subscribers but only lasted until 1972. Among other things The East Village Other was known for publishing underground comics including the work of Robert Crumb. 
There are ~40 issues of The East Village Other in the Hall Hoag Collection Part II.
