New Canvas Dashboard

Starting June 1, 2016, will look different

The Canvas home page will have a better responsive design suited for smaller screens and smartphones. There will be very few functionality changes, however, the landing page and global navigation will look different. In the “New UI (user interface)”, look for the following changes:

  • Dashboard: will display a grid of Course Cards [1]. Click on a Course Card to access a class site, or click on course activity icons to view recent course-specific Announcements, Grades, Discussions, or Files [2].
  • Canvas Navigation: Look to the left navigation menu for links to all Course sites [3], Canvas Account [4] information , and other global Canvas tools, like the Calendar and Inbox tool. Looking for Grades? It’s now on the right side of the Dashboard page.
  • Courses: Choose Course Cards by clicking on the Courses [3] icon, then “All Courses”. Click on the Star icon for a course to display as a course card on the Canvas dashboard.
  • Help: Report a problem, call, or chat with Canvas support using the Help [5] icon in the left navigation.

InstCon 2015: Student-Centered Learning

For the past five summers Brown has been fortunate enough to attend Instructure’s annual conference in Park City, Utah.  Brown adopted Canvas in August 2011, which makes us one of Instructure’s earliest clients (think first 50 out of over 1,400 customers.) Since then Instructure, InstructureCon, and Canvas have exploded.

How does InstructureCon fit in? Our team takes this time to participate in advisory boards to voice our major pain points (yes, we’ve told Instructure we need a Syllabus print button) and team with other customers to direct product development. InstructureCon is also a time to learn about what’s changing with Canvas and more importantly, what other institutions are doing in the online sphere.

Here’s some of what we’ve learned.

The next time you log into Canvas, you may be surprised by a few new features and some changes. Don’t worry, we think these changes are great:

  • Instructors can exclude assignments for individual students
  • Expect better Gradebook performance
  • New “Save & Publish” button (no more Save then Publish) for Assignments

We’ll also have more transparency around our feature requests.

If you’re interested in hearing more or contributing to the next Instructure/Brown check-in, contact us at or stop by the CIT in room 205.

Here’s a recap of InstCon 2015:

Back to School!

Hope everybody is enjoying a healthful and productive summer. It is August and we are gearing up to welcome all the faculty and students back on campus for the new academic year.

For those of you teaching in Fall, here is the semester-start checklist you can follow to make the transition from Summer to Fall teaching a bit easier for you:

New to Canvas? Want to use canvas more effectively? Check these Canvas Workshops we have lined up for you in August and September.

Not seeing what you need in the workshops? have specific ideas for your course? Feel free to contact us at to request a consultation.

We have added a lot of exciting educational technology resources to our repertoire over the summer such as Camtasia to create video for teaching, training videos accessible for Brown community, tools to support flipped classroom  and so on. Watch this space as we share more information every week.
