The John Carter Brown Library (referred to affectionately as the JCB) is an independently funded and administered institution for advanced research in history and the humanities founded in 1846 and located at Brown University since 1901. The JCB houses one of the world’s outstanding collections of primary materials related to the European discovery, exploration, and settlement of the New World prior to 1825, including manuscripts, books, maps, newspapers, and other printed objects.

With this blog we offer our readers a range of timely reporting on all manner of activities, objects, and personalities in the JCB, with regular contributions covering recent acquisitions, curatorial discoveries, research and publishing achievements, our Fellows and their projects, special events, digital initiatives, and the resolution of technical challenges peculiar to the world of rare book libraries.
