The Brown University Library and the John Carter Brown Library are pleased to announce the promotion of Joseph Campbell, previously Director of Facilities for the University Library, to Senior Director of Library Facilities, effective November 1, 2021, overseeing the facilities operations for both the University Library and the John Carter Brown Library. Joe will continue to report to Joseph S. Meisel, Joukowsky Family University Librarian, as well as to Karin Wulf, the newly appointed Beatrice and Julio Mario Santo Domingo Director and Librarian for the John Carter Brown Library.

Joe has been providing facilities oversight to the JCB on a temporary basis since January 2021 during its recent leadership transition.

As the Senior Director, Joe will assess needs and opportunities relating to facilities quality and building safety while coordinating with Facilities Management, Public Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, and the Office of Information Technology, in addition to other internal service providers and external facilities vendors.

Through over two decades of facilities work, including five years as the HVAC Controls Supervisor in Facilities Management at Brown, and two years of experience at the Library, Joe has developed a keen understanding of the special characteristics and requirements of collections study and research facilities. He has and will continue to ensure continuous improvement in the quality and functionality of the libraries’ physical plant for students, faculty, researchers, staff, and visitors, and to make the Library and JCB safe, inclusive, and welcoming spaces for academic pursuits.

Joe’s portfolio entails managing multiple complex facilities tasks, including construction, renovation, and repair projects, for the Library’s six buildings that comprise over 500,000 total square feet and the JCB’s two facilities — the main library building and the Fiering House fellows residence — of 41,000 square feet. Each building has distinct physical characteristics that require special care, and many house collections of great value. Additionally, the buildings are heavily used by students, faculty, and visiting scholars and must offer a welcoming, accessible, durable, and pleasing environment for a wide range of scholarly and social uses. Joe also directs the libraries’ security and safety operations, safeguarding the wellbeing of library patrons, staff, and collections; he ensures compliance with University policies and state and federal laws and regulations; and advises Library and JCB leadership on best practices.

Both Joseph Meisel and Karin Wulf are thrilled that this well deserved promotion recognizes Joe’s outstanding contributions while permanently expanding his responsibilities to include the JCB. Joe will continue to bring creative and energetic oversight to the maintenance, improvement, inclusivity, accessibility, and safety of all Brown’s libraries and the essential role they play for the University’s academic mission.
