Mairelys Lemus-Rojas Appointed Head of Metadata Services

Mairelys Lemus-Rojas

The Library is pleased to announce the hire of Mairelys Lemus-Rojas as the Head of Metadata Services in the Technical Services department. Mairelys’ first day at the Library was January 10.

Some of Mairelys’s responsibilities include leading the development of a roadmap to prioritize metadata creation, enhancement, remediation, and management with the goal of inclusive discovery; designing and implementing a program of staff development; and supervising the metadata services unit’s staff.

Mairelys comes to Brown from Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) where she worked as Open Knowledge Librarian in the Center for Digital Scholarship. In that capacity, she was responsible for leading the development of a vision for and implementation of a program of open metadata for library-supported open content that facilitates opportunities for innovative learning and scholarship through the share, repurpose, and reuse of library data. Most notably, she developed and implemented the Scholarly Profiles as Service (SPaS) which focuses on providing representation in Wikidata, a linked open data environment, for the campus faculty and their research output. This work aligns with her interest in increasing the presence of underrepresented subjects and communities in open platforms that offer opportunities for data reuse, facilitating the creation of new knowledge. Her publications and presentations on this topic can be found in IUPUI ScholarWorks: tinyurl.com/mairelys-scholarship

Prior to IUPUI, Mairelys worked as a Cataloging & Metadata Librarian at the University of Miami Libraries where she was mainly responsible for providing description and access to physical and digital resources for the Cuban Heritage Collection (CHC). While at UM, she was involved in the testing, development, and implementation of the Remixing Archival Metadata Project (RAMP) editor. RAMP facilitates the process to repurpose and transform curated contextual information present in EAD (Encoded Archival Description) Finding Aids for publication to the English Wikipedia.

Mairelys received a Master of Science in Library and Information Studies (M.S.L.I.S) from Florida State University (FSU) with a concentration in Web Design/Technology & Networking. She also holds graduate certificates in Museum Studies and Information Architecture.
