Against Bronzewashing: An Instructional Guide

My undergraduate thesis in American Studies surveyed recent works by contemporary artists on the topic of monuments. I looked for ways in which discursive, temporary, and critical projects might work against the elements of traditional monuments which have proven controversial in recent years. The works I examined created complex representations of the public and public space, celebrated vernacular forms, and attempted to dematerialize monuments. Here, I present a few examples in the form of an instructional guide for future interactions with monuments.
