“I also bought a house for them [in the Philippines]. That’s why I have to earn and work hard here…. Me and my siblings just decided to help each other to give it to our parents. My sister told my parents, and I’m on the phone, just watching them stare at it, my mom and my dad was crying when they saw the key to the house…. They were just happy and surprised, saying “thank you thank you, why did you do that?”
May
May is a Filipina woman who has lived in Taiwan over six years. Her original plan was to become a nurse in the Philippines, but on the recommendation of a friend she migrated for employment in other care work positions. She helps support her 4 siblings and parents, who call every day. She tries to only share positive stories with them, and even though she wishes they could be together, she sees her community at her current job at a nursing home as another kind of family. She hopes to return to the Philippines soon and see the house she and her siblings bought for their parents for the first time.
